Palominos Still on Top: Palo Alto Women Sit at 6–1, Eye Statement Win After Tough NVC Battle

The race for the TCAC conference crown just got a whole lot tighter — and the Palo Alto College women's basketball team is right in the thick of it.

Despite a hard-fought loss last week to Northwest Vista College (NVC), the Palominos stand tall at 6-1 in conference play, tied for first place and sending a clear message: this team isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

A Battle Between Heavyweights

Last week's showdown against NVC had all the intensity of a playoff preview. The two teams have now split their season series 1-1, and if the postseason bracket falls just right, fans could be in for a trilogy at the end of this regular season.

Last week, Kendall Gonzales and Brianna Villarreal put the offense on their backs, combining for 31 points and attacking the basket with relentless energy. Every time NVC tried to create separation, Gonzales and Villarreal answered. Tough drives, clutch jumpers, and some big free throws. Freshman Anelyna Cavazos delivered some of the most crucial rebounds of the night — extending possessions, battling in traffic, and keeping Palo Alto a good run away from making a big comeback. But down the stretch, NVC capitalized on key turnovers and late momentum to pull away, handing the Palominos their first — and ONLY — conference loss of the season.

Still on Top

Here's the bigger story: Palo Alto is still tied for first place in conference play with rival San Antonio College. Let that sink in...

After last season's struggles and this past semester's growing pains, this year's squad has made massive strides. A core group of returning players has transformed into a confident, cohesive unit that plays fast, physical, and fearless. The chemistry is undeniable. The intensity is real. And the belief inside that locker room? Unshakable!

Head Coach Fabian Villarreal has this group locked in. Practices are sharper. Communication is louder. Effort is non-negotiable. The loss last week? An anomaly — not a trend. If anything, it may have sharpened an already dangerous team ready to show what they got.

The Conference Is Wide Open

With teams trading blows and splitting season series, this conference is shaping up to be anyone's game heading into the playoffs. There are no clear favorites. No easy nights. And that's exactly how Palo Alto likes it.

The Palominos are at home again this Wednesday at 6 p.m. to face the Austin Community College Riverbats in San Antonio. Make no mistake — this isn't just another conference match up. It's a statement opportunity.

Palo Alto wants the rest of the league to know that last week was a bump in the road — not the beginning of a slide. With first place on the line and postseason positioning tightening by the day, expect a fired-up squad ready to defend home court.

The message is simple: The Palominos aren't planning on losing again. And if the intensity at practice this week is any indication, Wednesday night could be a showcase of exactly why.

Wednesday night's game is Faculty Appreciation Night for the Palomino basketball teams! So make sure you come out not just to support the athletes but also to support the people who help them succeed!
